about
Brainchild of singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Leslie Medford, The Ophelias burst out of the indie rock scene of 1980’s San Francisco with their remarkable cover of Mr Rabbit, and a reputation for engaging, offbeat live performances which they parlayed into a deal with Rough Trade Records. Melding an eccentric blend of Elizabethan lyricism, the moody intensity of early Van Der Graaf Generator, and blithely unrepentant rock and roll, The Ophelias released a string of impossible to pigeonhole LP’s, singles, and album tracks. Here included is Capitol, a showcase for the twin electric attack they often employed live, with roiling caterwauls and shivers of shimmers from lead guitarist David Immerglück (later of Monks of Doom, Camper Van Beethoven, Counting Crows) that propel a lyric which, as rendered wryly by Medford, sounds like a passage torn from a lost short story by Nabokov. In other words, prime Ophelias! Capitol was recorded in June 1989 on 4-track in the band’s rehearsal studio. The song was re-mastered in the year 2020 by Leslie Medford & Carl Salbacka.

Beautifully crafted tracks with a lot of heart. So happy they were reissued on vinyl with the IPR work of art packaging and available for streaming here on BC. Thanks Half String! slowdive_fan
First off I’m unbelievably excited this recording exists. Bonus is this label rules. So much care put into the packaging, fair pricing, postcards, and the ever important handwritten thanks. Peace, love, and take care. Your efforts on this document are greatly appreciated! popetones
